[ARCHIVED] How long should you leave irrigation turned off?

Photo of a screwdriver stuck into the ground

We’ve received A LOT of rain in the last several weeks.  How long should you leave your irrigation off?  One way to tell if your landscape is in need of water again is checking the top two inches of soil.  Once it’s no longer damp, then it’s OK to water.  You can also do a screwdriver test.  Insert a 4-6”screwdriver into the soil in a patch of your landscape. If it can be easily inserted into the ground all the way up to the handle, then there is enough water in the soil and the sprinklers can likely remain off.
